The Love of . . . .

It isn’t the love of wealth or the love of things or the love of property that is the root of all evil. I mean, those things are certainly to be subjected to serious judgment, but they are not the same as the love of money. The love of money is a stance, an aloofness, a detachment, a shaking off of the concreteness of lived life and the face of your neighbor. Like the love of wealth it is the desire for more, but unlike wealth, money floats above the ground, scanning the horizon for prey. To love money is to build a tower to rise to the heavens.
